"It watched me from beyond the treeline. No breath. No movement. Just eyes reflecting the firelight like twin moons. I reached for my pen before my rifle. I think it knew."

The Michigan Dogman is a tall, upright, wolf-like figure with piercing eyes and a thick coat of dark, silvery fur. He is said to roam the Upper Peninsula’s forests, from the deep pine corridors of Ottawa and Hiawatha National Forests to the wind-battered cliffs near Pictured Rocks. Though his sightings spark fear, those who do not trespass or harm the land are left untouched.
Some local speak of older traditions in hushed tones—not as a monster, but as a sentinel, a creature who remained behind when other spirits fled. Some believe he emerged during the great logging era in the 1800s and when lumberjacks began cutting into ancient woods, the Dogman emerged—not to attack, but to scare way or warn. Those who ignored that warning? Well, they say the woods have their own justice.
